Release Boatworks models are among the first custom boats to be designed from the keel up with pod drive power in mind.
These drive systems operate independently of one another for unprecedented maneuverability and are also more efficient since the propellers operate parallel to the water’s surface, providing substantially improved fuel economy. The additional benefits are numerous, including greatly reduced vibration and underwater exhaust for no diesel smell during operation (the exhaust gases surface well behind the boat even at slow speeds).
The ability to steer the drives independently brings other benefits as well, most notably a feature called Skyhook (Zeus) or iAnchor (ZF). Every pod drive system includes a built-in GPS sensor as well as an electronic compass and an inertia-measurement unit. By activating the position-holding feature, the GPS captures the boat’s position and the computer keeps the boat centered within a very tight radius of the initial setting. So whether you’re bottom fishing in 500 feet of water or just waiting for a bridge to open, the system will keep the boat in the same position and on the same heading automatically.
Along similar lines, the joystick engine control that comes with the pod drives allows users to dock and maneuver in tight spaces with unprecedented ease. Forward, reverse, side to side, the joystick makes these maneuvers not only easy but fun as well. By rotating the joystick knob, the boat will spin around in place solely with the thrust from the drives–no bow or stern thrusters are needed.
With the ability of each pod to operate completely independently of the other in terms of speed and direction, it’s quite possible that our boats will be among the most maneuverable custom sportfishing boats ever built.
